To race or not to race when sick
Race day – 2011 African MTB Champs.
Last week I got a bad cold and was down all week. This picture pretty much sums it up: I had the jersey, the number, the bike was clean and prepped. Except for one glaring shortcoming. My health. And in the bikes’ case – the seat post. (Which I lent to my team mate Melt Swanepoel for the race.)
Finely tuned athletes are like race horses – we just want to race. Its really hard to be objective about it and make the right choice. Sadly, I have lost two close friends who raced/trained when sick. I think about Cameron Jones and Steve Larsen often.
